Beat the Heat: Staying Cool on the Scorching Summer Golf Course

Jun. 25 2024 Golf Cart Tips By Joseph Powell

The sun is blazing, the humidity is stifling, and your grip feels like it's about to melt off your club.  Sound familiar? Summer golf can be a battle against the elements, leaving you drained and longing for the shade.  But fear not, fellow golfers!  With a few strategic moves and the right gear, you can conquer the heat and keep your cool on the course.

Hydration is King (and Queen):

This one might seem obvious, but it can't be stressed enough.  Dehydration is your enemy on a hot day.  Here's how to stay ahead of the thirst curve:

  • Start Early:  Hydrate before you even tee off.  Drink plenty of water the night before and in the morning leading up to your round.
  • Sip Steadily:  Don't wait until you're parched to reach for your water bottle.  Take small sips throughout your round, aiming for at least 8 ounces every 15-20 minutes.
  • Electrolytes are Your Ally:  Consider drinks with electrolytes to replenish essential minerals lost through sweat.  Look for sports drinks or electrolyte tablets to add to your water.

Dress for Success (and Coolness):

Your clothing choices can make a world of difference:

  • Lightweight, Breathable Fabrics:  Opt for loose-fitting, moisture-wicking clothing made from materials like cotton or linen.  Avoid dark colors that absorb heat.
  • Sun Protection is Paramount:  A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) are essential to shield yourself from harmful UV rays.  Reapply sunscreen regularly, especially after sweating.
  • Consider Cooling Accessories:  A wet towel to drape around your neck or cooling arm sleeves can provide a refreshing effect.  Some hats even come with built-in cooling technology.

Beat the Heat Strategically:

Plan your game to minimize heat exposure:

  • Early Bird Gets the Birdie:  Tee off early in the morning before the sun reaches its peak.  If that's not possible, schedule a twilight round to avoid the midday heat.
  • Seek Shade Whenever Possible:  Take advantage of shade provided by trees, buildings, or even your umbrella.  Duck into the clubhouse for a quick cool-down between holes if possible.
  • Pace Yourself:  Take your time between shots and avoid rushing.  The slower you move, the less energy you'll exert and the cooler you'll stay.

Bonus Tip:  Cool Down Your Clubs:

A surprisingly effective trick is to keep a wet towel in your bag and use it to wipe down your clubs occasionally.  The cool metal will feel refreshing on your hands during contact.

By following these tips and incorporating them into your golfing routine, you can transform a potentially miserable day on the course into an enjoyable and competitive round.  So, grab your water bottle, sport your coolest attire, and get ready to conquer the heat while conquering the course!
