The All-American SoapBox Derby with Lake Erie Golf Cars
Lake Erie Golf Cars is always looking for ways to be involved in the community. We have quite a few sponsorships, but this one is as unique as it is historic. As a kid you have probably heard the term soapbox derby and may have seen it referenced in movies. Did you know that it is an international competition and includes a world championship? It’s also right down the road from you.
The All-American Soapbox Derby World Headquarters is located in Akron, Ohio. It is here that they hold the championship race. The Akron-Area Soapbox Derby was founded in 1934 and has been running ever since. The first race was held on top of Tallmadge Hill until Derby Downs was built in 1936. This housed the largest soapbox derby race in the country year after year. The largest race was in 1959 when 556 kids raced for one championship.
This year I attended the sponsor portion of the race. This is where companies that sponsor the race can build their own soapbox derby car and take it down the hill. These creations were wild to say the least. Some of them had a high level of finish and polish while others embraced the spirit of their company. Next year, Lake Erie Golf Cars looks to be a part of the races and create their own car.
Stay tuned for more coverage on Saturday, July 23rd for the Soapbox Derby Championship.
