How to Stay Cool on the Golf Course
This is a great time of year to be out on the course as you land perfectly in every fairway, wink wink, we won’t tell anyone else. But while you are out enjoying the sun and dropping birdies, the heat can sneak up up on you and make your day that much more difficult. Nothing like heat stroke on the back nine, or the dreaded fried crispy skin from sun burn. We all remember how bad it itches when it’s healing, don’t remind us. While most of these things are easily avoidable, some are so simple they get overlooked. Maybe machismo has you believing that the laws of Earth don’t apply to you and you can smash that six pack in 90 degree heat and be fine. Maybe, but in case you aren’t trying to impress your friends, here are a few helpful often overlooked tips to stay cool on the golf course.
Hydrate
Ok, so we know we all have our favorite beverage on the course, but sometimes, you need to know when to say when. The hotter it gets, the more fluids your body will try to consume. If you have only filled you golf bag or cooler with adult beverages, you can believe that the hotter it gets, the more you will drink. Now, this doesn’t mean you need to go Bobby Boucher and only drink the finest h2o purified from your back pack, any “Waterboy” fans out there? The idea is to smartly hydrate yourself, set a limit, and make sure that you are taking water breaks in between beverages. Trust me, no one wants to be that person, so don’t be.
Dress the Part
Golf has grown as an industry and style has fully entwined itself with it. There are hundreds of brands and companies vying for you to buy their brand. But don’t let style be the reason you decide to load up on pink polos. The industry has put a lot of research and effort into making sure their clothing is best suited for the temperatures you often see on the course. It could be Dri-Fit, moisture wicking, or whatever the name they want to use, but the point is, they are design to keep your body cool. This doesn’t mean you have to spend top dollar on the latest nike Golf shirts. Look into other brands that may offer the same material and breathability that you will need to get through a hot day. Don’t forget the hat. Keeping the sun off of your face and out of your eyes can help fight fatigue and headaches. Shorts or pants may be dictated by the club, but show off those gams when you can. The cooler you stay, the better the day will be.
Early Birds Win Again
The summer and early fall can be brutal mid-day when the sun is doing its best to turn you into a human pile of pudding. One of the best ways to hit the links without feeling the burn is to go early in the morning. Whatever their first tee time is, go for that one. With the sun down and the temperature often being 10 degrees or more cooler in the morning, you will find this much more manageable for a long period of time. The downside is, you aren’t the only one who wants to do this. You will have to set your time in advance, sometimes weeks out, but in the end, your experience will be that much better. Bonus, some places have some great breakfast items, so don’t miss your tee time stopping at the golden arches to fill up.
Accessorize Your Ride
If you happen to own your own golf cart, you have an advantage when hitting the course. You are able to fit your golf cart with things that match your game and lifestyle. One great addition is a cooler that is mountable. LEGC has iceberg brand coolers for multiple vehicles. You can speak to someone in parts here, to find out what you would need to match your make and model. Maybe you want to add a fan to make sure you always have a breeze!
